Focusing on foundational literacy skills

Half of third graders in Latin America can't read or understand a piece of text.

We're working to change that.

Literacy is critical for success in school and in life.

Local women working alongside public school teachers or after school, Alianza educators help students learn basic literacy - a foundational skill critical for success. While gaining reading and writing skills, children also learn social-emotional skills and health practices. At home, children continue learning through "Aprende dónde estás," a low-tech literacy accelerator in the form of an audio series.

By fourth grade, Alianza students are nearly twice as likely to read compared to their peers.

Jaritza became a motivated learner

Jaritza struggled with reading. Discouraged, she started missing school more and more. An Alianza community educator noticed and encouraged her to attend literacy classes. Today, Jaritza is back on track to graduate and is an avid reader.

Lowtech solutions for high impact

Tech literacy is vital to a strong local economy and to success in the workplace. But many children in remote areas of Latin America have no access to electricity and the internet, much less technology. With support from partners like Mendix, we are developing an innovative solution.
