Meet Camilo, the Standout Student Defying the Odds in Latin America

Meet Camilo, an ambitious student who excels at reading.

We first met Camilo when he was seven years old, when his mom and Community Educator Karen Davila brought him to a Project Alianza school one day. Now 11 years old, Camilo and his family receive monthly cash assistance from Project Alianza to help cover education costs such as supplies and transportation. In addition to cash support, local women mentor students like Camilo and help them establish life-long goals.

From an early age, Camilo demonstrated a love for learning. At the age of six he competed in a reading-aloud competition in first grade, earning second place.

Camilo thrives through our scholarship program and aspires to give back to his village.

Camilo aspires to complete high school and secure a scholarship to study medicine. His dream is to provide medical assistance to families in his village who lack access to healthcare. Camilo hopes to become the first person in his village to achieve this feat and make a significant difference in the lives of others.

He has continued to excel academically, and his hard work and dedication have paid off. In June 2023, Camilo was chosen to participate in a local math competition. He achieved first place, competing against seven other schools. As a result of his success, he was invited to participate at the higher, municipal level.

There are hundreds more students like Camilo who need your support.

Students receiving literacy instruction and cash assistance from Project Aliana are nearly twice as likely to achieve reading proficiency by the fourth grade. Camilo's journey exemplifies this.

Currently, 80 students receive a scholarship across Nicaragua and Guatemala, but many more await their opportunity.

Join our monthly giving program and commit to just $12 per month ($.40/day) and you will provide the support a child needs to afford their school supplies, uniform, and transportation each month.

You can enable students like Camilo achieve a future they deserve.
