It's Been a Great Year

As 2022 is coming to a close, we’re reflecting on the past year and all the accomplishments we achieved together. Every milestone we reached had its challenges along the way, but you were always there for us. You were a pillar of support to thousands of children in Latin America, and for that we are whole heartedly thankful.

This is the last week to give to our End of Year Campaign — give now to make next year incredible!

GIVE TODAY

We are beyond thankful to have shared this past year with you and can’t wait to share the next. Check out Our Top 10 Highlights of 2022!

1. Our second scholarship student graduated

We met Marling when she was 11. Her parents reached out to build a school and now she’s the first to graduate high school in her family and the first Alianza scholarship student to go to college!

2. San Carlos got a school

We built a school in a small village from the department of San Carlos, Nicaragua and hired a new local, women Community Educator to launch and lead reading and writing programs where education didn’t exist before.

3. Amalia spoke at Harvard

Our Regional Director, Amalia Castellanos, was invited to lecture about women and community-led solutions all the way from Nicaragua to Massachusetts!

4. Sachary graduated university

One of our 18 Community Educators, Sachary, graduated from university with a degree in secondary education and she’s now working to receive a special degree in educational sciences with a major in Language and Literature. We’re so proud!

5. Loyda had her baby

Loyda Davila, our Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, became a new mom! Baby Carlos is growing up with an incredible mother and the most caring father. He also has the brightest smile we’ve ever seen!

6. All team meet-up in Nicaragua

Because we have team members across Latin America and the U.S., we hadn’t seen each other since the pandemic began. We all traveled to our office in Nicaragua, where we visited schools, students, and the Community Educators – and our newest team member, Misty (bottom right), joined the adventure!

7. We hosted Harvard students

Two brilliant Harvard students, Stephen and Tas, traveled to Nicaragua with us, who worked with our local team to develop a new reading and writing curriculum to support our Community Educators in the classroom.

8. Kristin was a feature at SCA

Our fierce leader and director, Kristin Van Busum, spoke at the Specialty Coffee Association about sustainability and ethics, where she also hung out with one of our roaster partners, Tinker Coffee!

9. Mendix and top developers began building an education app

Mendix hosted a hackathon where top developers designed an app to compliment our Learning-to-Read Radio Program that students use to learn at home. Soon, students and teachers will be able to access lessons from their phones as well, even without mobile data.

10. For the first time ever, our scholarship students met in person in Nicaragua

All of our scholarship recipients live in different villages located far into the rural areas of Nicaragua. For the first time, they all got to meet each other in person!

As you can see, 2022 was a busy and incredible year. We can’t wait for new and larger accomplishments next year! Give today and you can help achieve them.
