Impact of Hurricane Iota

Thank you to everyone who has reached out expressing love and concern about the impact of Hurricane Iota on the Project Alianza communities. As the storm passes through Nicaragua, families have been forced to evacuate their homes due to flooding and damage caused by extreme winds, so we've opened up our schools to provide safe shelter for families to sleep, eat, and rest until this horrific storm passes.

We know that education is not possible when a communities' basic needs and safety are not met. We have worked tirelessly through the pandemic and its economic aftermath to provide remote learning opportunities, and we will continue to support communities and work together to help achieve the security needed to overcome, rebuild, and heal from all that this year has brought.

Please continue to send your love and support, especially to our leaders, Amalia Castellanos and Loyda Maria Davila Salinas, who continue to mobilize and lead with unrelenting courage no matter the circumstances.

November 18, 2020 Update:

As a result of a tragic mudslide in the remote community of San Martin in Peñas Blancas, we know there is a loss of life as well as extensive damage to infrastructure, homes and coffee and cocoa farms. Together with our communities, we’re working to assemble a Hurricane Iota relief plan to aid communities in Nicaragua which we plan to announce tomorrow.

Today we grieve. Tomorrow we heal. And together, we rebuild. We appreciate you.
