16 Years Old, Marta Stands with Students Around the World

This year, we are grateful for all of the amazing people out there (yes, we’re talking about you) who invest in education. You are the reason we are able to do the work we do.

We’re grateful for people like M, a 16 year old student who donated to our effort to get schools up and running again after Hurricanes Eta and Iota. She heard about the damage and the fatal landslides, and the time in the classroom kids had lost. M. thought of her own experience with losing class time to COVID closures, and how much it had sucked to feel alone without the support of her fellow students and teachers.

"I figured since I make money now, it's time I start paying it forward."

M. had been saving for something big, but she decided this was bigger. She knew it would mean a lot to her if kids from different countries were pitching in for her school after a climate-induced disaster, so she decided to do the same and donated to our emergency Hurricanes Eta and Iota Relief Fund.  One student showing up to help other students.

When we asked why Project Alianza, M. explained that she loves school a lot, that being able to learn seems like a basic human right, and that she thought the women who run Alianza were particularly awesome. "Plus," she said, "I figured since I make money now, it's time I start paying it forward." M. is now 17, and learning more about climate-caused changes and storms in school. She wants to be a marine scientist when she’s older.

It’s students like M. that are changing the world. Together, we can empower the next generation to shape their world and build a brighter future.
